John Wayman Crow, Sr. was born on 13 December 1794 near Ohio County, Kentucky, to Maj. Joshua Crow and his wife, Mary "Polly" Wayman. His father was a judge and a veteran of the American Revolution.

John became an attorney and a merchant. He married Cynthia McCreery, 30 October 1817, in Daviess, Kentucky. Their children:

In 1844, John was a member of the Kentucky state legislature, elected to the House of Representatives.

He died, 6 August or September 1860, aged 65, in Hartford, Kentucky, and was buried with his wife at McCreery-Crow God's Acre.
