Birth: unknown
Death: Jan. 11, 1889

Civil War Confederate Officer. Prior to the American Civil War this native of Jefferson County, Georgia was an attorney. He graduated from Emory College in Oxford, Georgia, and after reading law under the tutelage of future Confederate General Ambrose Ransom Wright was accepted to the Georgia Bar. Further, he was active in state politics and was elected to represent his community in the Georgia State Legislature (1858-1860). In the early days of the war, he along with other volunteers, massed to organize the "Jefferson Guards". The Guards subsequently became Company C, 12th Georgia Regiment Volunteer Infantry and upon this occasion Carswell was elected 2nd lieutenant. He received a promotion to 1st lieutenant in March of 1862; however he resigned shortly thereafter to accept the captaincy of the newly organized Company E, 48th Georgia Regiment of Infantry. Promoted to lieutenant colonel on March 22, 1862, Carswell ably led his command during the Seven Day battles outside of Richmond, Virginia and was conspicuous during the fighting at Chancellorsville. He was appointed brigadier general of the 1st Brigade of Georgia Militia in 1864 and with this command, campaigned against the Federal army of General William T. Sherman. He was captured and subsequently paroled in Augusta, Georgia on May 20, 1865. His remaining days passed in Louisville, Georgia where he renewed his legal practice. In the year 1881, he was appointed judge of the "Superior Courts of the Middle Circuit" of Georgia. He died at the age of 51-years old on January 11, 1889.
