CHARLES CITY - Funeral arrangements were incomplete here late Tuesday at the Grossmann Funeral Home pending word from a son in Korea, for George W. Friend, 79, who died Tuesday at the Cedar Valley Hospital here. He had been in failing health the past three years. George was born August 20, 1874, in Marion, the son of Joseph and Mary (Collins) Friend. He married Susan Smith at Charles City on January 10, 1900. George was a mason by trade and in 1906 helped build the old river dam. He leaves wife, Susan and four sons, LaVerne, Minneapolis, Minn; Ivan, Beloit, Wis; Howard, in Korea, and Raymond, Minneapolis; three daughters, Mrs. Walter Hoel, Rockford, Ill.; Mrs. William Watts, Waterloo, and Mrs. Walter Henning, Albuquerque, N.M.; 12 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, two sisters and three sons.
