|Birth: ||Sep. 1, 1896|
|Death: ||Dec. 12, 1938|
Sammie McGary was born on 1 September 1896 in Beaumont, Texas, to Samuel Hopkins "Sam" McGary and his wife, Lida J "Lidie" Stroup. She was the youngest of three sisters, named for her father, who was editor of the Beaumont Journal.
Sammie's mother died of tuberculosis when she was a baby; she was raised by her uncle and aunt, Sam and Martha Foster. They had a stillborn daughter the year before, so it was a perfect fit. Sammie called her uncle "Unk", but she called her aunt "Mother".
Sammie married Eugene Erastus Bihn, 30 December 1916, in Beaumont, with a reception held at the Cromwell Apartments. They had two daughters: Laura Agnes and Marthagene Bihn. The Bihns appeared on the US Census of 1920 at Beaumont, Jefferson County, Texas, renting a house with four in family.
Eugene and Sammie were divorced 1924, remarried 1926, and divorced again 1928. Sammie supported her daughters during the Great Depression by working for her uncle at Foster's Print Shop. She was quite popular in Beaumont; so much that her dog, a Chow Chow named Tsue, received an obituary in the newspaper when he was hit by a car.
Sammie died young, 12 December 1938, aged 42, of pneumonia, at home in Beaumont. She was buried the next day in the McGary family plot at Magnolia Cemetery.

"My mother was very outgoing; everybody just loved her. Her name was Sammie and they called her 'Miss Sammie'. She was a real generous person. She'd give you anything Sis and I owned. She found a child that didn't have a toy, she'd come home and get one and give it to them. My mother used to say the best things in life are free: a kiss and a hug and a pat on the back.
"We never knew it was the Depression; we had plenty of food and clothes. Mother never did anything even when she worked. She didn't know how to work. She was a super salesman with her personality.
"My mother could go in any place and eat any kind of dish or anything and she could go home and fix it. She had an uncanny sense of food or something. She knew how to do everything. She was a wonderful hostess. She knew how to entertain, how to set the table.
"She knew all the policemen. One day, I was in the car with her and we were just buzzing along and this policeman on a motorcycle drives up and he said, 'Sammie, I've got to act like I'm giving you a ticket, but will you please be more careful?'
"My mother really practiced tough love. She knew how to keep us in line. She'd say, 'Who's the mother?' We weren't raised; we were encouraged. We were never discouraged. We were raised in a very positive attitude. My mother was for anything; she always encouraged us to do anything.
"I don't ever remember Mother being upset or mad. My sister and I never remember our mother saying she felt bad. She never complained. She just had some kind of a magic wand or something. She was real happy."
