Cavalier enlisted in the Confederate States of America, 16 March 1861 at Iuka Mississippi as a private in Co H, 26 MS Reg. His enlistment was for three years. He received training at Fort Donahue. The first fighting he was in was at Fort Donaldson (N TN) on the Cumberland River. This was Feb 13-1, 1862. On Feb 16 the fort was surrendered and Cavalier was among the prisoners of war at Camp Orthon Indiana. From 16 February 1862 until after August 24, 1862. Then he returned home by the prisoner exchange agreement. Cavalier rejoined his regiment and has several "engagements" on his reports. When the Battle of Coffeeville was fought he was "absent on furlough" on his records. He was in skirmish at Willow Springs May 3, 1863 and at Bakers Creek, March 1863. He was at Jackson MS from 9 July to 16 July 1863.
