The Rev. Grover Bishop, 76, of Odessa, Texas, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at Calvary Baptist Church in Odessa with the Rev. James Bishop officiating. A chapel service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home in Athens. Burial was in Athens cemetery.
He was born Dec. 18, 1928, in Cullowhee, and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He earned doctorates in theology from Calvary Baptist in Melborne, Fla., divinity from North Baptist College in Fort Worth, Texas, and Baptist Christian College in Shreveport La., and ministry from Bethany Theological Seminary in Dothan, Ala. He pastored churches for 49 years, including Calvary Baptist in Graham, Texas, Bible Baptist in Bowie, Texas, Fairview Baptist in Little Rock, Ark.; Central Baptist in Athens, Texas; snd Calvar Baptist in Odessa. He was the son of the late Neal and Bertie (Hooper) Bishop.
He was also preceeded in death by one son, William Ross Bishop; two sisters, Bonnie and Edna; and six brothers, Milford, Harley, Woody, Dan, Neal Jr. and Fred.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Rosalie (Ludwig) Bishop; two sons, John Mark Bishop of Athens and the Rev. James Bishop of Odessa; foster son, John Lashwa of Maybank, Texas; three daughters, Lydia Bishop of Athens, Sandy Kietzman of Columbia, Mo., and Peggy Hoffman of Conway, Ark.; one brother, Bill Bishop of Sylva; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
