RACHEL MARY PRICE PENFOLD

Rachel Mary Price was born December 18, 1874 at Charleston, Wasatch Co., Utah, to James Price and Ann Powell Price. She was the 9th child in a family of 13.

Two of her siblings died in infancy. She was reared in a good LDS home by parents who came from England because of persecutions there. Along with her duties in a large family, Rachel did housework for neighbors, dressed poultry and worked at "Strawberry Shingle Mill," until her marriage. Her schooling was brief, only fifth grade, but she was really good in reading, writing and arithmetic.

She married Algeroy Penfold December 18, 1893, on her birthday, in Herber, Wasatch Co., Utah, son of John Penfold and Elizabeth Thacker. He was born 3 Sep 1872 in Heber, Wasatch Co., Utah , and died 26 Aug 1951 in Hagerman, Gooding Co., Idaho.

Their first child, Ethel Fern, was born at Charleston, Utah, which is near Heber City. Ann LaPreal was also born at Charleston, Utah. A few years later, in 1896, they moved with their two small daughters, Ethel and LaPreal, to Teton Valley, Idaho. There at Fox Creek, later named Chapin, Idaho, two more daughters came to bless this union, Nora and Stella.

Pioneer life for Rachel included making all the clothing, quilting, gardening, milking the cows and making butter. She drove a team to Victor, Idaho, where she sold butter at premium prices to stores and a hotel. Several neighbors also bought her butter. She made her own soap and did her washing on a scrubbing board. At times whe had to melt snow to enable her to do her wash.

In 1903 or 1904, she was appointed postmistress for Chapin, Idaho. She added a stock of groceries and dry goods and a telephone was installed. Because it was near school, it soon became a sort of community center.

She died January 17, 1950 in Hagerman, Gooding Co., Idaho
