Seldon S. Baker, 74, Deming resident died Sunday, Sept. 23 at Sunshine Haven Nursing Home in Lordsburg.

A memorial service was held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Larimore Wickett officiating.

He was bom April 22, 1916 in El Paso, Texas and graduated from Austin High School in January 1934 and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Husbandry from New Mexico State University in 1938. Upon graduation, he was employed as a county agent throughout New Mexico by the Agricultural Extension Service of NMSU.

He served in the United States Army attaining the rank of Captain, Infantry Company serving from Oct. 15, 1941 until Dec. 25, 1945. On Feb. 18, 1945 he was wounded in Germany.

On Dec. 1, 1946 Mr. Baker was employed as the county agent in Deming. He began purchasing real estate in 1948 receiving his salesmans license in April 1968 with Rio Mimbres Realtors, and he received his brokers license in April 1970 in addition to being in the agricultural supply business. He was elected to serve as the president of the Deming-Luna County Board of Realtors in 1971.

He served on the OEDP Natural Resources Committee which was changed to Luna County Planning Commission for overall comprehensive planning and subdivision regulations. Mr. Baker served as a commissioner on the New Mexico-Mexico Border Commission.

For more than 30 years, he was an active member of the SWNM State Fair Association and served as treasurer from 1970-75. Mr. Baker as sumed the presidency of the Luna County Farm & Livestock Bureau in 1 953.

Seldon was a long-term member of First Presbyterian Church holding the position of trustee and Elder.

Survivors include his wife, Polly of the home; a son, Seldon Baker III and his wife Jeanne of Mesa, Ariz.; a daughter, Liza Gray and husband Rayburn of Bayard; his mother, Mildred Baker of El Paso, Texas, who is 105 years of age; four grandchildren, Kirk and Wayne Gray, Jim and Lisa Baker and two great-grandchildren, Robbie and Chris Gray.

The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the SWNM State Fair Association in memory of Seldon Baker at the First New Mexico Bank in Deming.
