Mr. Hufferd grew up in Arlington, Indiana, a small community in northwestern Rush County, about 40 miles southeast of Indianapolis. He was the son of the local mail carrier, and he had one sibling, his brother Hubert who was born when William was six years old.
Mr. Hufferd graduated from Arlington High School in 1935. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1945, with 28 months in Iceland. After WW II, he used the GI Bill to study at Purdue University and received his B.S. in agricultural engineering in 1950.
On August 25, 1950, when he was 33, he married Rita Mae HENLEY (b. 20-Oct-1925), daughter of Melvin and Margaret Henley. William and Rita had three sons and a daughter. His wife and their children survived him.
Mr. Hufferd worked for Public Service Indiana for 31 years, retiring in 1982 as a farm marketing supervisor, having worked in Kokomo and in Plainfield. He was a Mason (Carthage Masonic Lodge), and he was a member of the Rush County Historical Society.
