James Meek served as Captain and later Major under the command of Gen. Thomas Sumpter. During the Battle of Kings Mountain, Meek commanded a company of militia from the area that later became York County, South Carolina. He also served in conflicts at Briar Creek, Rocky Mount, Hanging Rock, Sumter's Defeat, Fishing Creek, Fish Dam Ford, Blackstocks, Biggin Church and Eutaw Springs.
He married Susannah Byers on Jan. 21, 1790, and she was the daughter of Captain Wm. and Elizabeth Walton Byers.
James Meek drowned or murdered and found at a crossing of the Seneca River in NW South Carolina while on his way to or from the sale of public lands in Alabama.
He was first buried on lands of the Anderson's plantation, fork of the Seneca and Tugaloo rivers. His remains were later removed in May, 1959 due to a dam/lake being built in the area, and reburied at Andersonville.
