A Love Story.

Becca was the beloved 'baby' and best friend of Karlene, who immediately fell in love with her when she saw that sweet puppy face in a pet store. Becca talked with her eyes, and they said, "Please take me home with you." From that moment on, Becca was with Karlene through some very devastating and hard times, always giving her 'Mama' unconditional support, companionship, love and the strength to go on with her life. She brought joy to every day when Karlene needed it most. Becca loved to go with Karlene everywhere, and they especially loved to go in the woods and hunt for morel mushrooms every spring. It was their passion, and you would never see Karlene in the woods without Becca being close by to protect her and warn of any danger, as well as romping in the leaves. When it was not mushroom season, you'd see Karlene and Becca walking down their road to the lake where Becca would jump into the water for a brief swim to cool off. She loved people, and would always welcome Karlene's friends as if they were her very own - because they were. She also had some doggie friends who came with the people friends. Becca was an also excellent hostess, picking up on Karlene's hospitality to all. She was friendly, loving and gracious to everyone. When Lucy and Bitsy came over, she'd always share her chew treats and toys. Everyone in Karlene's family loved her as well. She was always gentle and patient with everyone. She slept on a bed in her Mama's room, but usually ended up in Mama's bed. Karlene loved to do little extra things for Becca, because she was so grateful, loving and loyal during a time when Karlene needed it most. One August summer day, Karlene decided to take Becca to the vet because she'd noticed that her beloved friend was not eating as usual and was very lethargic. The news was devastating. Becca had a very agressive cancer that would claim her life in 3 - 6 months time. Karlene could not bear the thought of life without her best friend, so efforts were made to save Becca and give her a painfree quality of life, if even for a short time. She had surgery to remove most of the cancer, was put on pain medication, and bounced back to her happy self. It was a bittersweet time, but it gave Karlene six more precious months with Becca. Finally, the day came when it was obvious that the cancer had spread and Becca's pain could not be managed any longer. On a beautiful, sunny February day, they made the sad trip to the vet. Becca seemed to be her old happy self one more time - a gift to her Mama - to show her gratitude for their life together, and to let her know that she was going to be okay. She'd be waiting for her Mama at the Rainbow Bridge.

"Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge...

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing - they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. Her bright eyes are intent, her eager body quivers. Suddenly she begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, her legs carrying her faster and faster. You have been spotted! And when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hands again caress that beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your best friend, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together..."
