Born in York County South Carolina to Robert Dowdle (1743-1820) and Jane ?, he grew up in the York/Chester County region of South Carolina before his father moved the family to Pendleton District (what became Anderson County) South Carolina. He married Margaret, the daughter of his father's second wife (his stepsister). John is found with a growing family in 1800, 1810 and 1820 census in Pendleton District (from which Anderson County was created). In 1822-23, he moved to Tuscaloosa County Alabama where he remained about one year before moving to the Caledonia region. On February 15, 1823 ,John and Margaret sold thier property in South Carolina and moved to Monroe County Mississippi (what became Lowndes County) . John and his brother are found living close to each other in the 1830 Lowndes County census. He died in 1834 and Margaret lived another 30 years.


DOWDLE FAMILY
The numerous Dowdles of Unity Cemetery and Lowndes County are descendants of Robert Dowdle Sr., born in Pennsylvania to John Dowdle. Robert's family moved to Mecklenburg County North Carolina. He later moved to the York/Chester County area of South Carolina where he was living during the Revolutionary War. He served with General Sumpter and was involved in several battles, one being the Battle of Fishing Creek in which he lost his saddle and in which John Murphy Sr. (buried at Unity) was captured. In the early 1780's he moved his family to what became Anderson County South Carolina (Belton community) where he became an influence for good in both community and church. He married Jane ? and later Margaret - Childen of Robert and Jane were
