Virgie Babcock; 60-year resident Owned, operated nursing homes here for 55 years

Virgie R. Babcock, 85, who owned and operated convalescent facilities for 55 years, died Thursday in Torrey Pines Convalescent Hospital. Mrs. Babcock, a 60-year resident of the Bayside Walk Mission Beach area of San Diego, was a founding member and a past president of the San Diego Nursing Home, Sanitarium and Rest Home Association.
Mrs. Babcock, a native of Virginia, opened her first nursing home soon after she arrived San Diego in 1930. Through the years, she operated a number of convalescent facilities.
She was named Woman of Achievement in 1961 and Woman of the Year in 1962 in recognition of her volunteer work in care and promotion of legislation for the mentally retarded and disabled.
She participated in the President's Conference on Problems of the Aging in Washington, D.C., in 1960. She supported Door of Hope Home and Hospital, furnished a room at Crossroads Foundation for rehabilitation of alcoholic women and assisted the Senior Citizen Workshop in Balboa Park.
Mrs. Babcock worked for programs to train and find jobs for young people released from mental hospitals and corrective facilities. She spoke and wrote letters to the news media supporting on-the-job training for mature women.
She was active in the Order of Eastern Star and was a member of Southern Star Chapter 96 and of Mecca Temple 34 of Daughters of the Nile.
Mrs. Babcock was a member of the National Federation of Mental Health and of the County Community Welfare Council. She also was a member and had held offices in the Zonta International Club of San Diego. Survivors include her husband, Russell E. Babcock, and a sister, Mildred Quillan of Portsmouth, Va.
Services will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Merkley-Mitchell Mortuary chapel. Private inurnment will be at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
