Fred Ashook, 69, of Chula Vista founder and owner of Fred's Auto Body and Paint Co. in downtown San Diego, died Thursday in Scripps Memorial Hospital, Chula Vista. He lived in San Diego before moving to Chula Vista more than 25 years ago.

Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Friday in Humphrey Mortuary chapel, 855 Broadway, Chula Vista. Inurnment will be in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Mr. Ashook was born in Fall River, Mass. He settled in San Diego in 1939. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

He and Guadalupe "Lupe" Salcedo met in San Diego and were married in 1942.

He also established his business auto body and paint business at 320 14th St. in the 1940s. He headed the business for 45 years, retiring two years ago when he began to have heart problems. He turned the business over to family members who continue to operate it. He was active in business organizations, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the San Diego Timing Association, which involved auto racing.

He and his wife traveled, by motor home, throughout the western United States and Mexico.

Survivors include his wife, Lupe; four daughters, Judy Alvarez and Robin Figueroa of Spring Valley, Jeannie Ortega of El Cajon and Acela Ramos of Chula Vista; two brothers, George Ashook of Banning and Phil Ashook of Chula Vista; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
