William was baptized at St John's Church, Fort Hamilton on Nov 5 1843. Bet 1862 and 1863 he served in the 43rd Ohio Infantry in the Civil War. In 1867 he received a commission as 2nd Lt. from the Gov. of Michigan. He fought in the Blackfoot Wars and commanded a cavalry squadron in the Battle of Santiago in the Spanish American War.

William Stanton fought in Dakota Indian war 1890-1891.

In 1902 he was a Lt. Col 11th Cavalry and retired in 1906, breveted Brig. Gen. In 1924, Gen Stanton received a Silver Star, retroactively from Pres. Calvin Coolidge for service in the Spanish American War.
He is buried here with his parents and several siblings.

On February 5th, 1885, he married Marie Louise Burnett, at the home of her brother, Lt.Aaron Ward, in Newport, RI.
Louise's, father, Brig. Gen.Ward Benjamin Burnett, is buried at Green-wood, as is her brother Adm. Aaron Ward who took his mother's maiden name in order to inherit a sizable fortune from her side of the family.
William and Louise had no children.
