Inventor. He was the inventor of the electronic Taser stun gun. Trained in the field of nuclear physics, he spent most of his career in the aerospace and defense industries, serving as a major contractor for the Apollo moon landing program. Responding to the increasing threat of commercial airline hijackings in the early 1960s, he began development of a non-lethal device to stun and incapacitate terrorists and unruly passengers by firing an electrical charge, without risking the lives of fellow airline passengers or jeopardizing the structural integrity of the aircraft. By the early 1990s his invention had become a standard item for law enforcement agencies and military personnel around the world. He died from complications of Alzheimer's disease and pneumonia at the age of 88.
