Death: Dec. 18, 1910

Architect. Originally, his professional offices were located in Poughkeepsie, NY, but then in 1871 he established his office at 153 Broadway in New York City where they remained for the rest of his life. As a leading architect in the Mid-Hudson valley he designed many prominent buildings in Kingston, NY, including several churches, the New York State Armory (1878)and the Stuyvesant Hotel (1910). Hotel design became somewhat of his specialty. He was responsible for the designs of the following: the second Overlook Mountain House (1878)above Woodstock, NY; the Tremper House(1879)in Phoenicia, NY; the Grand Hotel (1881) at Highmount, NY, as well as hotels in Georgia and Florida. His most famous hotel is the Tampa Bay Hotel (1891). He designed this flamboyant, five storied, 511-room building as a winter resort surrounded with ornate gingerbread and topped by Moorish minarets, domes and cupolas for Henry B. Plant, a noted building, railroad and shipping magnate in the early development of Florida. This elaborate Victorian building is today's Plant Hall, a central focus on the college campus of the University of Tampa and the building still represents and remains a grand symbol of the city of Tampa and its history. Presently, the building is listed as a registered National Historical Landmark. (bio by: Edmond Spaeth)
