Julia Domna
Birth: unknown
Death: unknown

Empress of Rome. She was born in 170 AD, and as a teenager married the future Emperor Septimius Severus, for whom she bore two sons. When he was made Emperor in 193 AD, she travelled with him on his campaigns in the civil war against his rivals Pescennius Niger and Clodius Albinus. She was a valued companion of the Emperor and coins were minted giving her the title "Mater Castrorum". She later ruled the empire while Septimius Severus was away at war, and on his death in 211 AD, attempted to make her sons Geta and Caracalla rule as joint Emperors. The alliance was short lived, and Geta was soon murdered on Caracalla's orders. She went with Caracalla on his Parthian campaign in 217 AD, and committed suicide when he was assassinated during the expedition. Her body was bought back to Rome and buried in the Mausoleum of Augustus, but was later transferred to the Mausoleum of Hadrian. (bio by: js)
