KERSCHNER, James Wade A husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed onto greener pastures on February 6, 2009. James Wade Kerschner of "Big Jim", 87 years young, served Los Angeles County as a Captain in the fire department for 40 years. This also included time in the Fire Prevention Bureau. World War II broke out before James "Big Jim" Kerschner could make it to the Olympics in rope climbing. He was known in Los Angeles as "All City Kersch", attesting to his athletic prowess. He proudly served his country and returned from Italy so he could marry his sweetheart Patricia Hagen. Captain Kerschner moved to the Antelope Valley in 1952, purchasing 5 acres on the Westside for his fledgling family. On this acreage he became a quasi farmer. His
activities ranged from horses, cows, pigs, chickens and rabbits to pistachio trees. His family expanded to 5 children. He stayed in this home over fifty years before deciding to relocate to Mayflower Gardens in Quartz Hill. He will always be remembered for his devotion to family, his wonderful sense of humor, sense of justice, generosity and being a true sportsman. He had a passion for the outdoors, including deer hunting and camping. Later in life he began to develop an affinity for horse racing. In the year preceding his demise he began connecting to the world through the internet. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia Ann, 5 children, 6 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Viewing will be held from 10 a.m., to 12 noon, Sunday February 15, 2009, at Joshua Memorial Park, 808 E. Lancaster Boulevard, Lancaster, California 93535.
