Patrick Joseph Phelps, 76, Irish Settlement Road, died Tuesday February 10, 2009at United Helpers Nursing Home, Ogdensburg.

Mr. Phelps began his working career as an insurance agent for Metropolitan Insurance Co., and later became employed with Guardian Claims Service, where he specialized in liability claims. He then moved to the Watertown area and worked for New York Casualty Insurance as its claims manager for several years, retiring in 1995.

Born Dec. 2, 1932, in Ogdensburg, son of Joseph and Genevieve Ring Powers, he attended St. Michael's Seminary at Canisius College, Buffalo, for a few years and graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1951.

After graduation he enlisted in the Navy and served until 1955, when he received an honorable discharge.

He married Pauline Lalonde in 1954 in Ogdensburg.

He was a past exalted ruler, secretary and trustee of Ogdensburg Elks Lodge 772, a life member of the Ogdensburg Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the Ogdensburg and Heuvelton Amvets.

He enjoyed coaching Biddy Basketball in the late 1960s and early 1970s, golfing, socializing, reading and traveling.

Surviving are his longtime companion, Edna Lake, Heuvelton; two sons and their wives, Matthew and Helen, Ottawa, Ontario, and Michael and Samantha, Arlington, Va.; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Dr. Patricia Mahoney, and her husband, Michael McCarney, Julie Jerdo and Vicki and Christopher Bruyere, all of Ogdensburg, Kathy Phelps, Syracuse, and Lori Piercey, and her husband, Benjamin Mercado, Calimesa, Calif.; five sisters, Margaret "Peggy" Miller, Buffalo, Genevieve O'Hara, Lehigh, Fla., Patricia Boulia and Mary Carroll, both of Ogdensburg, and Rita Scott, Lisbon; eight grandchildren, a great-grandchild and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A brother, Lawrence Powers, and two sisters, Theresa Powers and Donna Phelps, died before him.

A prayer service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Fox-McLellan Funeral Home, Ogdensburg, followed by a funeral Mass at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Cathedral, Ogdensburg, with the Rev. Bryan D. Stitt and the Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating. Entombment with military honors will be in Foxwood Memorial Park, Ogdensburg.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Donations may be made to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Foundation or the Society of United Helpers.
