Erling Anton Christensen, 90, formerly of Maquon and Knoxville, died at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at Seminary Manor, where he was a resident.

Born April 11, 1914, in St. Edward, Neb., to Anton Cortenson and Jorgine L. Jacobson Christensen, he married Alma Beatrice Elliott on April 25, 1947, in Knoxville. She preceded him in death.

He also was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Surviving are one stepdaughter, Barbara (and Giles) Ahern of Wrightwood, Calif.; one brother, Roy of Filer, Idaho; one sister, Helga Peterson of St. Edward; four stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

A member of Maquon American Legion Post 1099, he was a World War II Navy veteran, serving from January 1942 to November 1945 in the Atlantic and Pacific.

He moved to Illinois in 1939 and worked at Yates City Milling Co. in Yates City. He also farmed in Nebraska and west of Maquon. He owned and operated a grocery store in Maquon from 1947 to 1957 and then was a forklift operator at Gates Rubber Co. in Galesburg for 17 1/2 years.

He was a member of United Methodist Church in Maquon and Yates City Senior Citizens.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Maquon Cemetery. The Rev. Larry Sheppard and Val Strode will officiate. There will be no visitation. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to his church or Community Hospices of America.
