Playwright, Screenwriter. He is best known for his Tony Award-winning play "Da", which became a 1988 motion picture adaptation. He was born John Keyes Byrne in Dublin, Ireland. In 1959, his play "The Big Birthday" was revised as a film titled "Broth of a Boy". His screenplay credits include "Great Catherine" (1968), "Percy" (1971), "Our Miss Fred" (1972) and "Widows' Peak" (1994). Among his television contributions include writing for such programs as "The Wednesday Play", "Public Eye", "Great Expectations", "Nicholas Nickleby", "Dombey and Son", "Armchair Theatre" and "London Belongs to Me". Further Tony Award nominations were received for his plays "The au Pair Man" (1973 to 1974) and "A Life" (1980 to 1981). In addition, Leonard was a noted journalist in Ireland.
