ISAAC NEWTON BARTON
Isaac was the son of Virginia natives, Isaac Barton, Jr. and Emma "Emily" Turner. Helived an uncomplicated life and was dependent upon no inheritance or influential friends. And although illiterate, he found his way from a humble station and discouraging environment. Isaac learned the lessons of fortitude and self-reliance which, eventually stood his children well in hand during the later years of his life.
He formed a matrimonial alliance, at the age of twenty-six, on 24 Dec 1888, with Mahalia Alice Hottinger. She being born, 8 Mar 1861, a daughter of Rockingham natives, Nathaniel Hottinger and Mary Margaret Wilt. Miss Hottinger was a sister of Sarah F., the third wife of Isaac Barton (1830-1905, father of Isaac Newton), who married six years prior.
Isaac Newton and Mahala Alice made Harrisonburg and later, Singers Glen, Virginia their home. Here, he was employed as a farm laborer. At times, the family had little to no income, during which Isaac marketed homemade horseradish. His wife took in laundry.
Understanding that there was little opportunity of local employment, the family relocated to Newark City in Licking County, Ohio between 1903 and 1909, where Isaac held a variety of odd jobs, and the family earned extra income by taking in single male borders. Soon after this move, a group of men lynched and hung a black man from the utility pole just outside their home. On another frightening evening, a group of locals, in search of a black man, rode their horses onto the front porch, while the young Barton children hid under a bed to escape detection.
Between 1920 and 1930, for the sake of his children and in hope of finding employment, Isaac once again removed his family to a small but charming home on 19th Street NW in Akron, Summit County, Ohio. Moreover, although, Isaac was unable to find steady employment, he enriched his children's lives by relocating. Many of them gained employment, met and married remarkable individuals, and later received the bounty, that of which, their father Isaac had sown.
Isaac's death, recorded in the Ohio Vital Statistics [Cert 14202] depicts the following: Isaac Newton Barton, a white widowed male retired Railroad Fireman, aged 82y 9m 3d,died at 4:30 a.m. on 15 Feb 1944 in Barberton Citizens Hospital in Summit Co., Ohio.
