Carroll M. Anderson, 84, passed away Saturday, February 7, from a long illness while residing at The Griffin House Assisted Living in Claxton. Mr. Anderson was a World War II Veteran, former co-owner of Baggett's IGA Supermarket and a cattle farmer. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the First Baptist Church of Claxton, and he had served as a member of the Claxton city council. He was a Director Emeritus of Tippins Bank and Trust Company of Claxton.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marion Collins Anderson of Claxton; a son and daughter-in-law, Carroll F. and Vicki Anderson of Claxton; daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Mickey Peace of Claxton; sister, Jewel A. Kennedy of Claxton; two brothers, Larry S. Anderson and Brooks Anderson of Claxton. Three other brothers, Randolph, J.C., and Embree Anderson, deceased; sister, Freida B. Padgett, deceased. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Michelle Peace Parker of Glennville; Dr. Brent Anderson of Nashville, TN, Brooke Anderson Walker of Los Angeles, CA; Jessica Peace of Greensboro, GA; Chelsea Anderson of Claxton; and Joy Peace Meadows of Atlanta; four great grandchildren.
Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by his mother, Mamie Caroline Brewton Anderson, who died shortly after giving birth, and his father, Jasper Clayton Anderson. He was raised by his mother's sister, Edna Brewton Baggett and her husband Floyd, as a member of the Baggett family.
In the Baggett household, he was raised as their own along with his sister, Frieda B. Padgett (deceased). He joined the Baggett grocery business in Claxton working there as a youngster and prior to entering World War II. At the end of the war he returned to the grocery store and later owned the business with his family. He retired in the late 1970s and devoted his time to farming and raising cattle.
Visitation was Monday, February 9, 6-8 pm., at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 10, at 2:00 p.m., at The First Baptist Church of Claxton. Reverend Dan Hughes officiated.
Pallbearers were Carroll F. Anderson, Mickey Peace, Dr. Brent Anderson, Larry Anderson, Darry Anderson and Scott Parker.
Honorary pallbearers were Directors and Officers of Tippins Bank and Trust Co.
Burial was in Brewton Cemetery, Hagan, GA.
