David Joseph FERREE was born in Indiana on September 3, 1836 to David & Tirzah Bell Ferree. He was the 8th of ten children. By 1845 his family was living in Iowa. Both of his parents died in 1854! In 1858 he married Elizabeth Johnson. He enlisted in the 2nd Iowa Calvary Regiment, Company A on August 1, 1861. When he mustered out on September 19, 1865 at Selma, Alabama, he was a full 1st lieutenant. His older brother, Samuel T. & younger brother, Theo L. also fought for the Union in the Civil War. Samuel fought in the Colorado Infantry & Calvary, while Theo was in the Iowa Calvary like his brother David. Many of David's 1st cousins also fought in the Civil War. Although they fought for different States (Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, Colorado, Missouri & Illinois) they all fought for the Union. Some died in the war.
