Father of Mayor Joe Lawther who is buried at Grove Hill Cemetery.
Born in Warren County, Pennsylvania, he was the youngest of seven children born to James Lawther and Jane Hood, who according to his 1900 census were born in Ireland and Scotland, respectively. He worked in mercantile concerns in Newburg, NY and Muscatine, IA. He married Helen H. Hoopes, daughter of J.J. and Amanda Hoopes of Covington, KY. They had seven children: Harry P., Annie L., Fredda A., Joseph Earl, William James, Raymond Ralston and Paul Warner Lawther. They moved to Jefferson City, MO. He enlisted in the state troops and was later elected a major of the 3rd Missouri Cavalry. He moved to Galveston, Texas after the war engaging in the wholesale grocery business. He subsequently relocated to Brenham and then Dallas, where he opened a wholesale grain and feed business.
