J.R. served as a Merchant Marine in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He was married to Beatrice Rumfelt in 1940. They had three children. He married second, Frances Jewel Shamblin in 1951. Three more children were born to this union. His third marriage was to Aida Carrasco Hendy, a native of Spain, in 1977. They were married in both Panama (Aida's home) and the U.S. Wherever JR made port, he always remembered me by purchasing a doll for me.
