The son of Marston & Sarah "Sally" Dearing Clay, Paul C. Clay was born in Lynchburg, Campbell Co., VA. He was married to Martha Ann West on Jan. 22, 1846 in Smith Co., TN. They were the parents of Ridley P., Marston E., Sally Frances, Betty Burford, Tinker West, William Young "Buck," Robert Lee, Hattie B., and Jettie Susan, the great grandmother of this contributor.
He was a surgeon and commissioned an officer in Company S, 28th Consolidated Regiment, Tennessee Infantry, during the War Between the States.
