Ruth M. Washburn was born October 16, 1950 in Baudette, MN to George and Ellen (Bergan) Washburn. She grew up in Finley, ND and graduated from Rolla High School. Following high school she attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.
In December 1970, Ruth was joined in marriage with Mike Huovinen. After graduating in 1971 with a Bachelors of Science for Elementary and Special Education, she taught special education in Belcourt, ND.
In 1974, Ruth and Mike moved to Mandan where she began her career with the Bismarck Public School System. During her 30 years there, she taught adult education, high school special education, and 4th Grade at Grimsrud.
Throughout her teaching career Ruth pursued additional education, obtaining her Masters in Educational Administration in 1992 and her PhD in Teaching and Learning in 2003 from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. She served as president of Phi Delta Kappa, North Dakota chapter. She traveled to Japan as a Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher in 1998.
In 2004, Ruth accepted a position as an assistant professor in the education department of Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD. She moved to Fargo in 2007 to take a position as an Assistant Professor at Valley City State University.
Although Ruth loved teaching, the biggest joys of her life were her sons. Michael Ross was born in 1976, and Andrew Mark was born in 1978. She was very involved in their lives by participating actively in the PTA, Boy Scouts, music and sporting events. She took great pleasure in passing on her love of learning and traveling by taking her family to regional museums and theatres. She encouraged her sons' education and held great pride in their accomplishments and successes.
Ruth loved traveling, gardening, sewing, knitting, exercising, and spending time with her friends and family. She was very active in all of the churches she attended: Rolla United Methodist, Mandan United Methodist, Highland Acres United Methodist in Aberdeen, and Flame of Faith United Methodist in West Fargo.
Ruth will be remembered for her energy, optimism, and smiles. She fervently believed in the goodness of people and the importance of caring for one another, practicing these beliefs in her daily life.
She is survived by two sons, Michael (Suzette) Huovinen, Inver Grove Heights, MN, Andrew Huovinen, Fargo; two sisters, Ruby (Brian) Lawler, St. John, ND, Mary Ellen Washburn, Broadus, MT; two nieces and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Jane Harris.
