Xiangshong "Jerry" Yang
Birth: Jul. 31, 1959, China
Death: Feb. 5, 2009
Boston
Suffolk County
Massachusetts, USA

Scientist. Born in Dong Cun, south of Beijing, China, he survived near starvation in his first year of life to become the first stem-cell scientist to clone successfully a farm animal, a Holstein cow, in the United States (1999). Previously he was also the first scientist in the world to develop male clones from a Japanese breeding bull in 1988. Recruited from his alma mater, Cornell University, by the University of Connecticut in 1996, he eventually became its founding director of the Center for Regenerative Biology in 2001. There his relentless support for human embryonic stem-cell research, along with his cloning success, propelled the university into national prominence in the controversial but astonishing new technology that offered new cures for a host of debilitating and deadly diseases. Cause of death: complications of cancer. (bio by: Fred Beisser)
