Company E 11th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry Lt. Col. Slater, who was mayor of Aurora Indiana when the Civil War broke out raised a company of cavalry and rode to Indianapolis to enlist. Upon arrival found that the quota had allready been met. Gov. Morton sent them to Kentucky where they became part of the 11th Kentucky and served throughout the war.

Enlisted on 8/13/1862 at Louisville, KY as a Captain.

On 9/22/1862 he was commissioned into "E" Co. KY 11th Cavalry
He was Mustered Out on 7/15/1865 at Louisville, KY
