Mrs. Mattie Dryden Dowling, 97, of Nahunta, passed away Monday afternoon, May 9, at Memorial Hospital in Waycross following a short illness. Her demise brings personal sorrow to a wide circle of relatives and friends throughout this and other areas and removes one of Brantley County's oldest and most beloved residents.

Mrs. Dowling was a native of Pierce, now Brantley County, and was the daughter of the late Nathan and Martha Harris Dryden.

She received her education in the public school system in Blackshear and Baxley and for a number of years was engaged as a school teacher. She was, also, a talented musician and was most versatile in playing the organ, piano and accordion. She was a devoted member of the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church and until declining health prevented, she took an active interest in church activities.

She was the widow of the late Ivey "Doc" Dowling.

Possessed of a quiet manner and unassuming disposition, she was a kind and true friend, devoted to her family, always thoughtful and unselfish. She loved and served her church well and her dedication to Christian principles had a tremendous influence for good.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Lois Herrin and Mrs. Llawannah Morgan, both of Nahunta and Mrs. lnez Hodges of Brunswick. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held at four o'clock Wednesday afternoon, May 11, from the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church with the Elder Howard B. Weaver officiating, assisted by the Elder Alvin Johnson and the Rev. Hugh Arnold.

Interment followed in the family plot in New Hope Cemetery. Serving as casketbearers were the Messrs. J.L. Morgan, Franklin DePratter, Randy Rowell, Donnie Batten, Lamar DePratter and Danny Batten.

The many beautiful floral offerings attested to the esteem felt for the deceased. The family has the sympathy of their many friends in their bereavement.

The Chambless Funeral Home of Nahunta was in charge of arrangements.
