Minister. Abolitionist. Transcendentalist. He was educated at the Boston Latin School. After graduating from Harvard College and Harvard Divinity School, he searched for a pastorate in Massachusetts and Maryland. Asked to preach at the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia, he would stay to pastor the church for 50 years, and spend another 21 years as its pastor emeritus. He authored many books on the subject of Jesus and the Bible. His book Miracles Controversy saw Christ's miracles as natural events, not supernatural ones. He authored a book on the historical Jesus entitled Jesus and His Biographers. He also translated German poetry into English. A friend of William Lloyd Garrison and Lucretia Mott, his house became a station on the Underground Railroad. He and Ralph Waldo Emerson maintained correspondance. The two had met at Mrs. Whitwell's School when Emerson was 4 and Furness 5. The friendship continued well into their old age. In 1825 Furness married Annis Pulling Jenks, and they had four children, architect Frank, artist William Henry, Shakepearean scholar Horace Howard, and translator Annis.
