(long article, edited)
Newton Floyd Burge, prominent citizen and pioneer merchant of Martinsville, passed away at his Moss Street home Tuesday morning following an illness that had spread over a period of several years.
Although active in the pursuit of his duties around the home and on his farm near the city up to a few days before his death, several years ago he suffered a severe injury when shocked by an electric wire from which he failed to fully recover.
Mr. Burge was in his 72nd year at the time of his death, having been born on March 3rd, 1858.
Funeral services were held from the First Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon, and interment followed in Oakwood Cemetery.
He was laid to rest with Masonic honors, members of the local fraternal organization being in charge.
Many relatives and friends attended the last rites paid this prominent Martinsville citizen.
Mr. Burge, coming to Martinsville nearly 45 years ago from the Blackberry section of the county where he was born and spent his childhood and early manhood days, opened a general mercantile store on Fayette Street, in the frame building now occupied by Rogers shoe shop.
After operating in this location for several years, he moved to Bridge Street, where he remained for 40 years, retiring from the mercantile field several years ago on account of failing health.
The deceased is survived besides his wife, who before her marriage was Miss May Hundley of this county, by the following children: Mesdames J. F. Floyd of Martinsville; F. R. Brown and B. C. Vaughan of Galax; L. H. Shumate of Johnston City, Tenn., and D. V. Carter of Clinton, N. C.; W. B. Burge of Martinsville and N. F. Burge Jr. of Galax. Two brothers, D. J. and J. D. Burge of Winston-Salem, N. C.; and one sister, Mrs. Fannie Craig of Bassett, also survive.
He was the son of the late William L. and Nannie F. Burge of the Sanville section of Henry county.
