Martinsville and vicinity were shocked today to learn of the death of William B. "Billy" Burge, Sr., about 55, well-known Martinsville bakery operator, churchman, and former merchant, which occurred at his home on Ellsworth Street, following a heart attack. Mr. Burge had just returned to the home from his place of business on College Street where he had assisted the plant force in getting out the days production, when he suddenly was stricken with a heart attack. He died before the arrival of the family physician who had been hurriedly called.
A lifelong citizen of Martinsville, Mr. Burge was the son of Mrs. N. F. Burge and the late N. V. Burge, pioneer local merchant. He was associated with his father in the mercantile business until he acquired the Martinsville bakery about 20 years ago. He was an active church worker for 30 years, being clerk and a deacon of the First Baptist Church. The deceased was also a member of several fraternal organizations, including the Pythians and Masonic order. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bertha Woodson Burge and three children, Margaret and Billy Jr., the latter a student at the University of Richmond, and Lewis, at home. . His mother, Mrs. N. F. Burge, Sr., of Galax. Also five sisters, Mesdames Fred R. Brown and B. C. Vaughan of Galax; Lewis Shumate of Johnson City, Tenn., D. V. Carter of Clinton, N.C. and J. F. Floyd Jr., this city and one brother, Newton F. Burge Jr. of Galax. Final tribute was paid this afternoon (Tue., Dec. 29) from the First Baptist Church followed by burial in Oakwood Cemetery.
