Born Selig Shaftel to Russian immigrant parents, he enjoyed considerable success as a Tin Pan Alley songwriter. With over 300 songs to his credit, he co-wrote several standards including "Besame Mucho," "Amor," "Love Me With All Your Heart," "And So to Sleep Again," and "Hair of Gold, Eyes of Brown." A short list of the artists who recorded his tunes include Bing Crosby, Patti Page, Jimmy Dorsey, Petula Clark, The Ink Spots, and Connie Francis. Early in their career, The Beatles recorded a version of "Besame Mucho" that was not available commercially until "The Beatles Antholgy" was released in 1995. He was also a singer during the Big Band era, working with bandleaders such as Paul Whiteman, Ben Bernie, Abe Lyman and Vincent Lopez. He later took his act to Las Vegas, where he was a popular headliner at hotel/casinos such as The Flamingo and El Rancho.
