ST. GEORGE - Our beloved and sweet mother and best friend, Koa Ellen Lazenby Taylor Morrill, age 95, died February 5, 2009 peacefully at her home in St. George, Utah. She was born July 11, 1913, in Loa, Wayne County, Utah, to Moroni and Rosa May Stewart Lazenby. She married Alden Ray Taylor October 14, 1931, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He preceded her in death March 23, 1971. She married Robert Merlin Morrill January 23, 1973 in Provo, Utah.
Koa grew up in Aurora, Utah. Following her marriage to Alden Taylor, she lived most of the next 45 years of her life in McGill, Nevada, where she was active in auxiliary leadership and teaching positions in the LDS Church. She taught Seminary for five years. With her sweet spirit and gift of teaching, she was an influence for good in the lives of many people. She was honored as "The Woman of the Year" as part of her county's centennial celebration. She worked as a medical secretary and insurance clerk for Kennecott Copper Corporation. She was later honored again by AARP as "Volunteer of the Year" for the state of Utah.
A few years after her marriage to Merlin Morrill, they moved back to the Morrill Ranch in Wayne County, Utah, spending the winter months in Southern Utah and Southern Nevada. Following their return from their mission for the LDS Church to North Carolina, they moved to St. George where Merlin Morrill died a year later in 1976 (sic, 1986). Koa became an extractor of German records, enjoying Temple work, and being an active member of the 16th Ward, St. George LDS East Stake. She loved her Family Home Evening group of dear friends, who have faithfully met together each Monday afternoon for many years. She had the special ability to uplift, love, and encourage all who came into her presence, and was, in turn, loved by all who knew her.
She is survived by a son, Vasco Ray (Mary) Taylor of Mapleton, UT and daughter, Rose Lynn (Phil) Mason of Washington, UT; by eight grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Koa Donna and husband Melvin Bonsteel and grandson Clayton Bonsteel; brothers Leland, Wallace, Urban, Arthur and Leslie Lazenby and sisters Rosa May Adams, Bertha Jensen and Elizabeth Nielson. Other survivors include a beloved family she acquired through her marriage to Merlin Morrill: Utanah (James) Mills, Nola McGuire, Lolan (Lois) Morrill, Arlo (Joyce) Morrill (deceased), all of Salt Lake City, UT., with many grandchildren, great, and great-great grandchildren; one sister, Barbara (Leo) Fredrickson of Boise, ID; and a special adopted German daughter, Meta (Robert Mac) Adams of Salt Lake City, UT.
Graveside services will be held Monday, February 9, 2009, at 1:00 p.m., at the Freedom Cemetery, Freedom, Utah. A visitation will be held Sunday, February 8, from 5-7 p.m., at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. St. George Blvd., St. George, UT.
