| Birth: | Mar. 5, 1810 | | Death: | Jun. 12, 1859 |  Pioneering Chemist, Politician and Author. After finishing his studies he worked as a chemist in his father's business in Oxford Street, London. In 1841 he set up the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, in order to protect the interests of chemists and improve their status. He went on to found the Pharmaceutical Journal, and oversaw it's publication for eighteen years. In 1845 he drew up a bill to prevent unqualified persons practicing as pharmacists, and establish the Pharmaceutical Society as the governing body of the chemists' profession. He was elected as Member of Parliament for St. Albans in 1850, and in 1851 he successfully brought forward a bill proposing reforms in pharmacy. He was also a member of the Linnaean Society of London, and the author of a "Historical Sketch of the Progress of Pharmacy in Great Britain". (bio by: js)
