Johannes Schenck was born Sep 19, 1656, possibly in Middelburg, the Netherlands, and died Feb 5, 1747/8 in Bushwick, Long Island, New York at the age of 90.
He married Maria Magdalena de Haes on Jul 2, 1685 at the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam, New York. She was born Oct 7, 1660 in Middelburg, on the Island of Walcheron, Zeeland, the Netherlands, and died Apr 10, 1729 in America at the age of 68. He died in Kings County, New York.
Johannes Schenck came to this country in 1683, residing first at New York City.
On Sep 5, 1684, he transferred his membership from the Middelburg church to the Reformed Dutch Church in the city of New York.
From New York he moved to Ulster County, where he was residing during the census on Sep 1, 1689. He then moved to Flatbush, Long Island, where he was town clerk from 1691 to 1694, and from 1700 to 1712. During the years 1700 to 1712 he was also a schoolmaster.
In 1703 he bought a tract of 640 acres on the Raritan River, in New Jersey.
In 1707 he bought a plot with buildings on the west side of the main road in Flatbush, which he sold in 1712 to his son-in-law Johannes Janse.
On Sep 17, 1711, he bought of Teunis Titus and his wife Mary a mill and plantation of 83 acres in Bushwick, and moved there. He also bought from them 7 acres in Newtown and 25 acres elsewhere.
He was town supervisor of Bushwick in 1719.
His will was dated Jan 4, 1745, and proved on Feb 29, 1747:
"I, Johannes Schenck; of Bushwick in Kings County. Gentlemen, being in declining condition of body. I leave to my grandson, Johannes Derje (Duryea) 10 pounds and my silver headed cane. To my grandson, Johannes Schenck, Jr., my small cane. The rest of my estate I leave to the children of my daughter, Susanah, wife of Johanes Johnson, to the children of my son, Johannes Schenck, to the children of my son, Peter Schenck, to the children of my daughter, Margaritie, wife of John Strycker and to the children of my daughter, Cornelia, wife of Charles Derje. I make my sons-in-law, John Strycker and Charles Derje, executors."
Johannes Schenck was buried on his home place in Bushwick, Long Island. In 1945 his tombstone was in the Museum of the City of New York. It read "Johannes Scheuck, ye first of the Family dept this Life Fbry ye 5, 1748 Agd 92."
