*Thank you Teresa "Terry" Lewis, for the information about the Good families' ancestors being persecuted Mennonites from Switzerland, and Germany*

Alex died when he was 70 years old. I have seen it mentioned that he, and Elizabeth were married in 1864. They had abt. 10 children. He was a Carpenter (owned his own business).

American Civil War Soldier, Confederate Veteran. Husband of Elizabeth Cash. He, and Elizabeth got married in 1864. His father was Joseph J. Goode (1817-1880), and his mother was Sarah Catherine Burkett (1816-1888). Elizabeth's father was William L. Cash (1809-1871), and her mother was Malinda Scalf (1815- ). Elizabeth was born in abt. 1848. She died in 1886 possibly in Greene Co., TN. They had a total of abt. 10 children: Calidonia (1864-1941), Sarah Catherine (1865- ), Joseph William (1867-1947), Mary M. (1869-1924), Laura A. (1872-1964), Nancy J (1872-1960), James Franklin (1877-1945), and Samuel Pickren Good (1883-1957).

I am looking for Alex's wife, Elizabeth Cash Good (abt. 1848-1886). There is an Elizabeth Cash Good at memorial #70300154, but I am not sure if it's her or not. If anyone out there knows for sure where she is buried, please get back with me and let me know. She was probably buried in Greene County, Tennessee. Thank you.

For some reason two of Alex's sons, Joseph William Good(e), and James Franklin Good(e) added an "e" on the end of their surname in the 1920's. Alex had a son named, Samuel "Sam" Pickren Good, who had a son named, William "Willie" James Good who also went on to add an "e" on the end of his surname as well. Then Willie's son, William J. Goode then went on to take the "e" back off of his surname, and changed it back to Good again. Some of these men's children will have an "e" on the end of their names, and some of them don't. It can be very confusing when your trying to do research - sorting all of this out.

The surname "Guth" is German, and Jewish (Ashkenazic) from modern German, and Yiddish gut, middle high German guot 'good' or capable. It evolved from the low German word "Gude," meaning "good." It came from the Frisian word "Gudde", as well as from the German "Guth" which was used in the middle ages to refer to a free man of noble birth.

***There is a memorial for a Joseph Good (1861-1914), and his son Joseph F. Good (1901-1904) at: 61211016. His son was only about 3 years old when he passed away. He shares the same memorial with his dad. He was buried near his dad, and has the little grave stone that says, "J. F. G." I am still trying to find out if he is related to the same Good line as I am.***

Bio. by Wanza Bryan GoodWhen Michael Alexander Good was born on January 11, 1844, in Washington County, Tennessee, his father, Joseph, was 27 and his mother, Sarah Catherine BURKETT Good, was 27. He married Elizabeth Cash in Tennessee. They had 10 children in 19 years. He died on August 26, 1914, in Greene County, Tennessee, at the age of 70.

Every census record from 1850 - 1910 the spelling is 'Good' not 'Goode'. This is also the spelling on Alex's death certificate. All of Alex's paternal ancestors spelled their name Good. Also, all of his children's surname was Good except for his son, Joseph, who added an 'e' to his surname in the 1920's and his son James Franklin who added an 'e' to his surname in the 1920's.

This family descends from the Goods of Switzerland and Germany who were Mennonites and immigrated to Pennsylvania in the 1700's. This has been proven through paternal Y DNA testing.
