Edward Curtis Hunter was the third of six children born to William Wright Hunter and Selina Ellen Kirk. He was the only son born to this union, having five sisters, Virginia Belle, Clarkie May, Diverah, who died at the age of four, Ruth, and Willie Edna. Curtis had one half-sister Leona Humphrey Hunter Ramsey, and two half-brothers Lillard Nicholas and Walter B Hunter.

Curtis married Bernice L Matkin in 1918. They were the parents of three sons and one daughter, Edward B, Johnnie W, Lawrence Matkin, and Curtis Louise Hunter.
