THE HENRY BULLETIN, Friday, February 2, 1917, p4, cols. 5 & 6:
Captain B. W. L. Philpott, the subject of this sketch was born July 21, 1839, and died January 4th, 1917, aged 77 years, a son of John J. and Elizabeth R. (Walker) Philpott.
He voluntered for service in the Civil War and was assigned to Company F, Witchers' Company, 57th VA Regiment and served his country until the battle of Gettysburg. When he went into that battle with Armisteads' Brigade, Picketts' Division, he was taken a prisoner and carried to Johnson Island, Ohio, and there remained until the close of the war.
In 1871, he was married to his first wife who was Miss (Sarah Elizabeth) Bettie France of Patrick County, and by this union there were four children.
His second wife was Miss Charlotte Foster, also of Patrick County, and by this union there were six children.
He is survived by his wife and the following children by his first marriage: George E. Philpott of Martinsville and William B. Philpott of Bassett; by his second marriage, Mrs. S. E. Corn of Ferrum, VA, Misses Bessie J., Mattie G. and Ruth D. Philpott of Bassett, one brother and a sister, John L. Philpott of Bassett and Mrs. E. G. Lee of Bluefield, West Virginia. He was laid to rest in the family burying ground near his home beside his father and mother and four children who preceded him.

B.W.L. Philpott, son of J.J. and E.R. Philpott, married on Sept. 4, 1871" who married a second time, "B.S.W. Philpott, widowed, age 41 years, son of J.J. and E.R. Philpott, married on May 31, 1881 Charlotte Foster, age 30, the daughter of A.P. and M.J. Foster.
Benjamin Philpott had a brother, Peyton, b. circa 1842 who fought in the Civil War and was killed and buried near Richmond, VA.
