The son of James & Elizabeth (Hubert) Haas, in 1860 he was a cigar maker living with his parents in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had black hair and hazel eyes. He married Fianna Hill and fathered William (b. @1864), Samuel (b. @1866), Levi (b. @1869), Clara E. (b. @1872), Charles (b. @1875), Thomas Barker (b. 08/22/79), Caroline (b. @1883), Bertha (b. @1886), Mabel E. (b. 10/??/87), and James Henry (b. 02/26/90).
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster as a private with Co. K, 77th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company December 6, 1865.
The 1860 census claims he was twenty-one years old, but he claimed twenty-three at enlistment.
