Daniel Watts Webb, 73 native of Rankin County, prominent citizen of the Monterey Community, active member and senior deacon of the Briar Hill Baptist church, was fatally stricken Sunday morning in the church as he prepared to voice the regular announcements. He died within a few minutes.
Mr. Webb, a member of a pioneer Rankin County family, had been elected in 1950 to a "lifetime" tenure as Sunday School Superintendent of the Briar Hill Baptist Church, in which he had been active most of his life.
He had an extensive farming interests in the county, and was manager of the J.H. Alford Gin Company at Florence.
Mr. Webb is survived by his wife, Mrs. Helen Fay Hurst Webb; four sons, Horace Watts Webb and Wayne Sutton Webb, both of Jackson; Hurst L. Webb, of Florence; Shelden Webb, of Mendenhall; two brothers, Thompson B. Webb, Sr., of Florence and Jimmy T. Webb, Little Rock, Ark.; two sisters, Mrs. Alma Boteler, Florence, and Mrs. Kate Dickson, of Jackson. Fourteen grandchildren also survive him.
Funeral services were held at the Briar Hill Baptist Church Monday afternoon with the Rev. Wayne Alliston, the pastor, officiating, assisted by Dr. W.A. Hewitt, The Rev. Martin Gilbert, the Rev. Wilbur Webb and the Rev. Bobby Lee Compere.
Interment followed in the Briar Hill Cemetery.
The active pallbearers were Raymond Webb, Tom Dickson, Albert Dickson, T.M. Dickson, Emmett Dickson, Herman Boteler, Bernard Boteler, Joe Stubblefield, Watson Stubblefield and Johnny Stubblefield.
Deacons and officers of the Briar Hill Baptist Church, Dr. W.H. Watson, of Brandon and Dudley Phelps, Sr., of Jackson, were honorary pallbearers.
