a New York State politician and newspaper publisher/editor. He was also the father of U.S. Vice President James Schoolcraft Sherman.

* Co-owner/editor Utica Morning Herald (1847-82)
* Brigadier general, New York State militia (1841-57)
* Clerk, New York State Assembly (1851-57)
* New York Assemblyman, 1st District of Oneida County 1857/1875-1876
* Delegate,New York State Constitutional Covention (1867)
* Assistant clerk, U.S. House of Representatives (1870)
* Secretary, New York State Fish and Game Commission (1879-1890)

Trustee, New Hartford Cotten Company - he restocked the lakes of the Adirondack Mountains area with fish; also protected the forests from unscrupulous lumber dealers

Richard was the founder of the North Woods Walton Club which traveled to the Fulton Chain in the 1850s and 1860s and organizer of the Bisby Club in 1878 whose holdings he conveyed to the Adirondack League Club in 1893.
