Oliver Anderson was born @1833 to parents Eliakim (1803-1872) and Catherine (b. @1810 in PA) Anderson. His known siblings include: Louis (b. @1829), Elizabeth (b. @1837), William (b. @1840), Jefferson (1842-1904; also Co. H, 38TH IND INF), and John W. (b. @1851). On Dec. 22, 1853, when Oliver was approx. 20 years old, he married Miss Margaret Stainbrook (b. @1833) in Posey Co., IN. At the time of the 1860 U.S. Census, Margaret and Oliver lived in Stewartsville, Bethel Twp., Posey Co., IN. On Nov. 12, 1864, Oliver, along with his younger brother Jefferson, was drafted into service with Co. H, 38TH IND INF. He, like his brother Jefferson, survived the hardships of Sherman’s Carolinas Campaign, the Battle of Bentonville, NC, and the “Race to Richmond” before mustering out on June 28, 1865 at Louisville, KY.
At some point in the years after the war, the Andersons relocated to Illinois. While living there, Oliver applied for a federal veteran’s pension on Nov. 21, 1888 (app. #679,231; cert. #462,833 - Illinois). He passed away sometime between 1888 and 1890, as his wife Margaret applied for a widow’s pension on June 18, 1890 (app. #426,140; cert. #348,311 - Illinois).
