Son of John & Molly (Cox) Craig of Washington County, Virginia.
On 20 Nov 1801, Hiram married Mollie Mitchell Tate (1774-1833). They had six children: Jane, Harold, Maria, Charles, Margaret, and Idress. The family remained in Virginia until its migration to the territory of Missouri around 1818. The Craigs are among the earliest permanent settlers to the region.
In 1820 the territorial legislature appointed Hiram Craig a commissioner to determine the county seat of Chariton County, newly formed from Howard County.
In the 1830 census for Chariton County, Craig is living with his wife, four children, and nine slaves.
