Jesse was born in Newton Township, Miami County, Ohio, as Jesse Marrion Coat.
Quite often he was referred to as Jesse Miles Coats, however, that is incorrect. Maybe, some confused his name with his son John Miles. Or, the fact he seemed to only use his middle initial of "M" and since his father's name was Miles many may have thought that "M" stood for Miles.
He is the son of Miles David/David Miles Coates (it was seen written both ways) and Mary Humphrey.
In 1858, Mason County, IL, he married Rosanna Matilda Snyder and had five children: Laura Alice William Allen, Mary Matilda John Miles and Louisa Catherine.
On July 1, 1863, in Monon, White County, Indiana, at the age of 24, he signed up for service in the Civil War in Co. K, 20th Indiana. He marched off to war to do his country proud leaving behind a wife and three small children.
About 1879 he remarried to Jeanie McConnell and settled in Kansas.
In 1894, his first wife, Rosanna, remarried to James Covington and they relocated to Nebraska.
He is buried in an unmarked grave in Maple Grove Cemetery.
