Robert L. LaVigne was born Sept. 15, 1919, in Ogdensburg, son of Joseph G. and Alice Fadden LaVigne , he graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy, where he was an outstanding athlete, playing varsity basketball in his freshman year. He held a VanDeusen Track and Field Meet record for 25 years and played on the 1938 championship football team. He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific theater.

He married Claire M. King on May 30, 1942, at the Massena First Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Ross officiating.

Mr. LaVigne worked for his father and later ran the family's laundry and dry cleaning business until its closing. In 1966, he went to work at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center Power Station, retiring because of ill health in 1979.

He enjoyed helping at Basta's Flower Shop, working in his flower and vegetable gardens, observing wildlife around his home, reading, and visiting with family and friends.
