John P. Cassalia, 90, of Boca Raton, Florida, formerly of Syracuse, New York, beloved father, grandfather and friend passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 22, 2009, at home. John was married to the late Kathleen Cutilla of Warners, NY, for 54 years, until her death in 1995. During WWII, John served in the Pacific Theater on Tinian Island as staff sergeant in the .U.S Army, 535th Air Engineering Squadron, 72nd Air Service Group. His career was spent as president of family-owned Syracuse Barber and Beauty Supply, Inc., Syracuse, New York. He retired to Boca Raton in 1980. He was a kind and gentle man who loved being with his family and friends, boats and boating and a great game of golf. Four daughters and his sons-in-law survive him: Melanie and Robert O'Donnell, Mary Lynne Cassalia, Jacqueline and Dennis Barrett, and Jeanine and James Freitas. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Heather (Mark) Livingston, Tamara (David) Dyckman, Alex (Lori) Finkel, Justin Freitas and Melissa (Craig) Jones; his great-grandchildren, Kara and Matthew Livingston and Emily and Aubrey Dyckman; his brother, Patrick Cassalia of Onondaga Hill, NY; his sisters, Frances Palladine and Rita Bonaccio, both of Solvay, NY; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, whose pictures he proudly displayed in his home. The family received friends 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, January 23, at Babione Funeral Home, 1100 North Federal Highway, Boca Raton. The funeral Mass will be Saturday (today) at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Boca Raton. Entombment in Boca Raton Mausoleum.
